API series - Tigris Data: Developers love APIs & data, but do they love data APIs?
The CEO of a data API company shares this guest post to make the case for API-first data approaches. Instead of building and maintaining databases directly, the author argues that we should be integrating data APIs that receive, hold, and expose the data in meaningful ways. Sort of like a Stripe or Twilio for their respective services. There are pros and cons to this, of course, but it certainly makes it so that the developers focus on business logic more than anything. - John Forstmeier
How Fivetran + dbt Actually Fail
This pointed three part article digs into the potential dangers of over-relying on Fivetran and dbt. Without the right approach, cloud costs can easily skyrocket. It’s important to take an introspective look and make sure you’re building out your data operations with the right structure while being aware of the costs associated with these decisions. - Blake Burch
10 Tips to become a Data Scientist or Machine Learning Engineer
This is decent advice for people looking to break into the data landscape. I know a lot of people who are interested into pivoting into the data/analytics area, and this provides some useful advice. Some of the tips are overkill and not truly necessary, but overall good. The first 4 are the “must haves” in my opinion. - Wes Poulsen
Homophobia Is Easy To Encode in AI. One Researcher Built a Program To Change That.
Not gonna lie, one of my favorite things to stumble upon on Reddit is an AI generated movie script. But just as often as you find funny scripts, you find scripts or chat bots that have been fed hate speech. It’s nice to see someone taking a stand against the negative side of it, and actually somewhat enlightening to see how an AI may flag something as simple as “she held hands with her” versus “she held hands with him.” - Joseph McDermott
Data Sovereignty Extends Beyond Real Data
This is the first time I’ve read about using synthetic data in the future to get around all of the different laws regarding user privacy. I would really like to see more movement in this direction to help keep user privacy as strong as possible. - Jon Davidson
Top 10 Future Data Analytics Trends in 2023
Mathias’s take on the upcoming trends in the field is thought-provoking and informative. Some of the trends that I found myself eager to learn more about are data democratization (pulling data access and intelligence out of its tech silo), augmented analytics (combining machine learning and natural language processing to automate analysis), and data fabric (creating unified architecture of integrated data technologies and services to provide a consistent end-to-end solution). - Katt Baum
5 Exceptional Podcasts Episodes to Listen to
Sometimes I’m not in the mood to read or article or maybe I’m sick of listening to the new Blink-182 song. Either way, I love to fill those times with podcasts to entertain and inform me on new topics that are interesting. Riesling has started a series where she recommends podcasts, and she does a great job. I really thought the podcast on yard work was interesting. - Steven Johnson
