All Hands on Data #50
For our 50th edition, I wanted to throw in a special article on how we build this newsletter on a weekly basis. Check it out below! Thank you for joining us for 50 weeks! Here's to 50 more!
Automating Building our All Hands on Data Newsletter
All Hands on Data is one of my favorite parts of my job at Shipyard. I enjoy getting to see what the team chooses every week which allows me to continually grow and learn more about the data space at large. In this article, I break down the (mostly) automated process of building All Hands on Data every week. Maybe it can spark an idea on automating something that you do on a weekly basis as well! - Steven Johnson
GPT Prompts
While it's not so much an article as it is a collection of resources, the assembled ChatGPT prompts are pretty interesting. Not only do they provide a good basis for how to phrase requests to the LLM, they also provide lots of interesting context around roles and tasks in the data space. - John Forstmeier
ChatGPT in Education: Friend or Foe?
My former colleagues in higher education are all a buzz about what ChatGPT means for students and professors. There are many reasons to be for or against AI in the classroom. Two of Flynn's "pro" points touch on access in education: inclusivity and free tutoring. That really struck me. What a profound difference it could make in a student's life to "freely ask as many clarifying questions as necessary without judgment". - Katt Baum
Automated Remediation Can Make Dashboards a Thing of the Past
Who hasn't relied on dashboards to monitor the health of their network? Isn't it a pain to look up the status of a website that you know isn't working, but the status dashboard says it is? Automated remediation utilizes advanced technologies like AI and ML to identify and resolve issues in real-time without human intervention - offering benefits such as improved data quality, faster issue detection, and reduced downtime. By leveraging automated systems, organizations can quickly identify anomalies and execute remediation actions, minimizing errors and preventing problems from escalating. Sounds like a good alternative if you ask me. - Reed Cowan
Faster data, faster car: How BWT Alpine F1 Team aims to lead the Formula 1 tech race
I think this is a fun spin on how industries you wouldn't expect are leveraging data. With the grand prix in Miami having kicked off, F1 is going to be all the rage the coming months and think it could be a fun piece for our readers - Angel Catalan
Orchestration Isn't Going Anywhere
While the entire Data Orchestration symposium has great writeups about Data Orchestration, this one caught my attention. While the role of "orchestrators" may be shifting, "orchestration" will continue to be something that data people do, whether they call it that or not. - Blake Burch
Become a Terrible Data Engineer
A bit of a satirical piece here, but if you're looking for a roadmap to become a successful DE, then doing exactly the opposite of everything listed is a good start. To sum up, strive to be easy to work with and embrace best practices. - Wes Poulsen
AI for Everyone: Learn How to Think Like a Data Scientist - Part 1
The author advocates for broad participation in AI development, stressing the importance of diverse input for ethical AI models. Introducing the "Thinking Like a Data Scientist" (TLADS) methodology, it offers a practical guide to engaging with AI responsibly. This compelling read democratizes AI involvement and encourages active, informed participation from everyone, not just tech specialists. - Jon Davidson
