All Hands on Data #81
Welcome to the last AHoD of the year! We are celebrating with a few holiday themed articles this week. Check them out below and we will see you in the new year for AHoD #82!
Advent of Code 2023
Straying from the typical article, I wanted to share the Advent of Code with anyone who may not already be aware of it. There's 25 days of engineering puzzles that can be solved with any tools or languages you might have access to. I've had a lot of fun tackling the problems in my evening's and then seeing how other people solved the same problem in different and more efficient ways. This has been occurring every December since 2015, so I have a lot to catch up on! - Blake Burch
Terrible Ideas for Avoiding AWS Data Transfer Costs
In an oldie but goodie, the author lists some pretty amusing ways to transfer data within AWS. You can't really go wrong with an article that straight up recommends misusing (literally using that word) AWS products to get around billing pain points. - John Forstmeier
Data Science vs Data Analytics: Which one is right for you?
With a lot of the data roles coming with interchangeable names, understanding the differences can be confusing. This article gives a good high-level overview of what the responsibilities of these roles include to determine what path to go down. It's also a great pre-cursor to our Captain's Compass series coming in 2024! - Angel Catalan
Hanukkah of Data
Similar to the Advent of Code, the Hanukkah of Data provides a series of data analysis puzzles that can be solved over the holiday. If you enjoy your day job but want to stretch yourself, this is a great way to put your skills to the test! - Blake Burch
Data management implications of the AI Act
AI is always on our minds these days it seems, and the constant question of "What's the limit"? Well members of the European Parliament and the Council reached a provisional agreement on the broad-reaching Artificial Intelligence Act, aimed at safeguarding public welfare, digital rights, democracy, and the rule of law from AI-related risks. Now with all of this in the EU, there's more implications to all the different ways to manage data! - Reed Cowan
